The food was actually delicious, and Charlotte had resolved to try and figure out how to recreate everything when she had some time. She sipped from the glass of her second martini, savoring the crisp flavor and watching Jason surreptitiously lick chili sauce off his fingers.
If this was the real him, then it was easy to see why he had been moderately uncomfortable at the fundraiser. He definitely had a country charm about him, and the more animatedly he talked, the more than Southern accent showed up.
It was actually very charming, and Charlotte found herself laughing and having a good time. Since she didn't want to talk about her work, Jason talked about his, telling her about how he'd gotten interested in computer systems and how he'd built his first computer when he was sixteen and never looked back.
She couldn't imagine having that kind of passion for something, and she was caught up in the way his eyes seemed to glow when he spoke with pride about his work.
It wasn't about the money with him, that much was obvious. Being wealthy let him do more things and expand his business, but it was clear that he was into it because he loved it.
Charlotte had to admire that.
She also very much appreciated the way he seemed to actually listen when she talked. If there was one thing some of her clients were guilty of, it was treating her like she was nothing more than decoration, and she hated that.
When she teased Jason about his lack of skill in the kitchen, he fired back with asking her about her own skill, which led to her explaining about how much she loved to cook.
Whereas some people would have just listened politely and then moved on, Jason asked questions. He wanted to know what her favorite things to make were and if there was anything she was allergic to. He seemed to be interested in learning all he could about her, and while that put her on edge for obvious reasons, it was also refreshing.
Usually, she was there to make her clients look good. She was there to talk them up and look pretty on their arms, to make people want to take notice of them. But all Jason was expecting from her in the moment was for her to eat and relax.
It seemed to good to be true, and every time she found herself relaxing too much, she reminded herself that there was still more to come and that there was plenty of time for Jason to disappoint her.
After all, maybe this time he'd want to take advantage of what was on offer. Maybe that's what this had always been about in the first place.
